Temperature change during a chemical reaction

Aim: Design an investigation to find out whether a chemical is endothermic or exothermic.

1) Define: Endothermic, Exothermic, Activation Energy (PowerPoint HERE, Animation HERE, )

2) Find the products for the following reactions:
a)
sodium hydroxide solution + hydrochloric acid --> (click for hint)
b) sodium hydrogen carbonate solution + citric acid --> (click for hint)
c) copper sulphate solution + magnesium --> (click for hint)
d) sulphuric acid + magnesium --> (click for hint)

3) Design an experiment to find the temperature change during a chemical reaction.
a) State what you will change (independent variable, y-axis)
b) State what you will measure (dependent variable, x-axis)
c) List the equipment required
d) Explain how you will know whether a reaction is endothermic or exothermic.
e) Draw an empty table of result

HWK) How will you make your investigation a) reliable [repeats/precision] b) valid [fair test/accuracy] c) safety
